Laundry/ Mudroom Phase One

We all have a problem room. You know the one that you just can't get to work for you despite numerous attempts.  You rearrange/ repurpose/ redecorate until you are blue in the face & still the room is a big fat F. Well around here we are failing miserably in the laundry/mudroom. It is so bad that Hubby, who you will come to learn in NOT enthusiastic when it comes to home projects,  announced we needed to do something about the situation. We aren't dealing with "oh I'm sick of that paint color" bad, but rather "I hate going in that room" bad.  So mudroom fix up has gone to the top of the list.

Before

Here is what we started off with. The room is long, narrow & is the only access to the garage from the house (read: major thoroughfare).  The bookshelves are from Ikea and in theory seem like a great idea but they had three major problems:
  1. They were too shallow to hold laundry baskets. So instead they collected clutter.
  2. Their footprint was too deep for the room, making the already tight space even more confining.
  3. They occupied the entire wall leaving no place for the kids to hang their coats (they can't hang coats up themselves in the closet).

I had just emptied one of the three bookshelves when I took this shot.

Door to garage is straight ahead and to the left is a closet.

View from the kitchen

So one night I set to work emptying shelves & organizing the ungodly amount of junk we had amassed. Hubby & I then theorized several different layouts & settled upon this:

Phase One

We relocated the two larger bookcases to the garage. The emptied area now houses wall pegs for coats & backpacks along with a cubby bench.  The bench is actually the narrow Ikea bookshelf  (from the before) turned on its side.

The kiddos can now hang up their bags & coats. The hope is this eliminates said items from
being thrown on the floor and causing serious injury to either Hubby or myself.

The center bookshelf has been turned into a bench w/cubbies for shoes.

Each child has his/her own wall cubby while Hubby & I each have a set of three. The bins house shoes, hats, gloves, scarves, & purses. I love the clean & concealed look, rather than the open storage of the prior bookshelves. No matter how hard I tried, they just always looked messy & unorganized. How this room looks is important to me because it is visible from our kitchen dining area.

The wall cubbies came in black & I simply used chalk to write each family member's initial on his/her cubby. In the future we can use them as memo boards reminders/ notes or to decorate for holidays/special occasions.
The fresh chalk was too much of a temptation for the kiddos.

I've had these bulletin boards sitting on the bookshelves unopened for months meaning to use them for the kids' artwork. They LOVE having their masterpieces displayed & I love how it helps corral the clutter.
You can see where we added another set of 3 wall cubbies at the "laundry" end of the room. The oak peg racks were hanging in the house when we moved in.

The minor changes have made such a major improvement to the flow and function of the room. In fact, the pictures above were not even staged. It appears that there is a place for everything & near everything is in its place pretty much 100% of the time. To be honest, if 80% of it is in its place 80% of the time I would declare this a roaring success.

We are going to continue to live with this set up for a few more weeks (we've been in the house over 2.5 yrs and have yet to find a set up that "works"long term).  Having to wait kills me as I am all about instant gratification. Yes, the organization in someways is gratifying, but I want to see all the pretty pieces come together.

So in an effort to pass the time, I am making a laundry list (no pun intended) of to-dos for the room including:
  • Swapping out the horrific light fixture (thinking either a chandelier or pendant fixture)
  • Paint for the walls, cabinets & shelving (maybe large horizontal stripes)
  • Art work
  • Bench cushion
  • Mirror
  • Chore chart
  • Growth Chart
I'll be sure to keep you all posted.

In Living Color

This is the bay window in our kitchen. The patio door has a wreath to match the windows, but it won't be going up this year. Instead we have a direct view of:

In the dark:

Reminds Hubby & I of the Corona commercials.
The kids have been begging for colored lights so Hubby put up this little display to surprise them. Best of all it is remote controlled.

Hubby's backyard light show isn't huge, but it is the little things like this that mean the most. Hopefully we all can remember this Christmas that some of the best gifts are not the biggest or fanciest, but rather the ones that show you listen & care. Hubby knocked this one out of the park!

Grinch Cookies and Cocoa

Ever since I was a little girl I've loved How the Grinch Stole Christmas. So naturally, I'm all about sharing the Christmas classic with the kiddos. This year I decided to pull together a surprise for Belle & Peanut while they were at  Annie with YiaYia & Bopi: Grinch Cookies & Hot Cocoa.

I took refrigerated sugar cookie dough and added green food coloring, peppermint extract, dark chocolate chips & green mint chips.

They were delish,..,,the combo of mint & dark chocolate was yummy.

When the kids returned home we read the book and enjoyed the cookies.

Poor Peanut spiked a fever shortly after the story.
That is the only reason there isn't a big grin on his cookie-loving face.

Listening to Mommy read

Bear hearing The Grinch for the 1st time. Despite his best efforts,
Bear' didn't have a cookie, but rather Rice Krispie cereal

The kiddos were exhausted from a fun-filled Christmas themed weekend, but the Grinch surprise was a success.

Bathroom Routine Cards

Contrary to what my kids may believe, I hate to nag. And even more so I hate to be unorganized. Now it doesn't mean I'm great at either, but rather I aspire to nag less and organize more. So with that said, let me introduce the B family's bathroom routine cards.

Each day has its own card and a column for AM & PM. Underneath the column lists the task to be completed & which part(s) of the body receive said treatment.

I laminated each card, hole punched the corner & tied a ribbon to keep the cards together.

I'm happy to report that the cards have helped significantly. There is no arguing about what hygiene task is to be performed. I do a better job of staying on top of weekly tasks like nail & cuticle trimming. And Belle is getting ready for school in the morning by herself using the card's list as a guide.
Not too bad for a 5 minute project. Happy Monday everyone!

Christmas Decorations 2012

Click here to see the outdoor holiday tour.

Our halls are decked so come on in and look around. I used fresh greenery inside this year and I'm really taking to it...just hoping it makes it till New Years (finger crossed people, fingers crossed). That's not the only Christmas decor dilemma. You will note that there are only 3 stockings hung by the chimney with care.  Hubby & I certainly enjoy a full stocking, but our current set was purchased when Belle was a baby (and at the time I swore she would be an only) from Bombay & Co. and they are now out of business. So until I can figure out what to do, Hubby & I are stockingless :(

Ok enough jabbering: pour yourself a cup of eggnog, turn up the Christmas music and come on in!

2012 Ornaments

Every year we buy a Christopher Radko ornament for each child as a way to commemorate the year and add to their collection. Growing up my parents bought me an ornament every Christmas and when Hubby & I got married we had enough to fill a tree. I love the idea of investing in something a child will have & use for a lifetime, rather than a toy he/she will use short term.

This year the kiddos were gifted their ornaments on December 1st as a way to kick off the Christmas season (along with our Advent house which you can read more about here).

The kids awoke to their ornament presented in front of the
Advent house, waiting to be hung.

For Belle the animal lover.

Each of the kids has a rocking horse to commemorate his/her 1st Christmas.
This is Bear's.

Peanut's ornament is a lighthouse, a nod to a fall trip we took.

I look forward to the day each child has
his/her own tree full of these beauties!

Although they aren't thrilling gifts to open now, I hope the kids will thank Hubby & I when they get older. Do you do commemorative gifts with the special kiddos in your life?
