Manor Monday {Valentine Decor + Basement Update}

Hubby, Belle & Peanut are all home today so while they are off to see "The Nut Job" and the baby naps, I am going to capitalize on the moment and try to break down our basement progress.

I figured first though, I would start off with some photos of our Valentine's decorations. This year I kept the pops of red to a minimal and went for a little more refined take on the sweetest day of the year.
Here is our kitchen chalkboard. I found a chalkboard marker in the dollar spot at Target and I love it!

At times certain chalk would scratch the chalkboard surface and with the marker I don't have that concern.

On the kitchen buffet, I used a trio of apothecary jars filled with Valentines straws, red hot jellies, and white chocolate covered pretzel sticks. To dress them up a tad I added 3D heart stickers to the top of each jar.

Here comes a shock, the paper straws and heart stickers came from the Target dollar spot as well.

And finally, our Valentine mailboxes have made a return this year. The littles love pouring though last year's letters and can not wait for new ones to arrive on February 1st. (You can read more about this tradition here and how I personalized the boxes for free here.)

So there you have it, our 2014 Valentine's tour….just enough to feel festive especially since it is all contained to one room.

And now on to the basement. I am so happy to report we have made some major progress and are about 70% complete. But you know it is the details that really take the longest.

Just as a refresher, here is what the finished portion of the basement looked like a large playroom and game room.

It was the first project we checked off the box in 2013 (full reveal and addition photos here).  After a year of living with the space, we noticed that the seating in the playroom was impeding upon the flow of the room. We needed a wide open space where kiddies could ride trikes, kick balls & race cars. Hubby suggested that the game room would be better served as a media space where the kids could come with their friends and watch movies while the adults carry on upstairs.

So after quite a bit of rearranging this is where the rooms are to date.

The playroom is working out beautifully. There are still several bins of toys to purge and some broken trim to replace, but overall the space is 95% complete.

In the media room we decided to utilize the preexisting builtins as a media cabinet and like the look so far. This room is about 50% finished, but thankfully Hubby hooked up the media components so the room is fully functional.

As for the unfinished half of the basement, this is what we were dealing with folks; four year of accumulated stuff to phrase it nicely. Hubby started by sorting and reorganizing the entire crawl space and then moved on to swapping the areas that had housed our at home gym and workroom.

Meanwhile, I tackled the mess. Sorting, purging and boxing up as much as I could. In the end, this massive pile of trash along with an old rear projector big screen TV & archaic freezer (why didn't we think to have the old owners remove that beast) were all evicted from the basement.

The basketball hoop and air hockey table were moved to the largest room in the unfinished section of the basement. The littles' collection of ride on toys along with an assortment of summer items (which will eventually find a home in the garage once we tackle that project) are all that reside in this large open playspace. We do hope to add a mirror under the spotlights on the right hand side for Belle's ballet barre and repaint the floor so this space is about 90% complete.

To the left of the basketball game is our new home gym. When we moved in, this area was 2/3rd builtin  workbench. Hubby removed and repurposed a portion of it in our new workshop before moving the bow flex and treadmill into the space. This room is about 50% complete as we need to still purge some unused weights, deal with the mess of wires overhead and build a wall to close the space off from the littles. But like the media room it is fully functional.

The biggest change of all came in the space behind our new media room. It is 75% complete and mainly a storage heaven with rows and rows of bins grouped and soon to be labeled.

Hubby also has a small workbench area that will double as a craft space.
I am most excited about an entire shelving unit dedicated to Peanut's outgrown clothing. I spent hours pouring through it all and sorting it by size, type & season. I even had enough space to add a large bin full of clothing I would like to list for sale (when I actually get some downtime).

There you have it…..quite a bit of progress and quite a lot more work to go. For this week I would love to see us tackle the mess on top of the workbench, label the clear bins, add a gift wrap center & clean up the extraneous wires throughout the various spaces. Anyone else been up to their eyeballs in organization?

Basement Reveal Follow Up {What it looks like now}

As we begin to usher in the holiday season and soon the start of a new year, I am quickly working to check items off our 2013 House Goals. The kid's bath is complete and I'm hoping to share the reveal with you all next week. For today though, I wanted to go back to the very first goal of the year, the basement. I thought it would be fun to show you all what the room looks like today….10 months after we've used & abused it.

So this is the space prettied up for the reveal.

And here is what it looks like now (don't mind the photo bomber…I didn't even try to keep him out of the pictures).

The train table in the center of the space is a new addition & rotates between the pictured location and being pushed up against the wall. The toy box that use to reside along the far wall under the silhouettes, now acts as a side table. Other than that not too much has changed except a large explosion of toys.

In the "game room" all the toys that use to live in the closets are now at home either under the air hockey table or built in buffet. Having items out in the open helps for two reasons:
1. Toys that are visible are used.
2. I turned the closets into storage for my entertaining and party supplies.

The addition I am most excited about is the shoe cubbie turned car lot. This is the best way to corral all the Boys cars and makes for kid friendly clean up.

So there you have it….my real life update on what our space looks like after the makeover. I'm still loving the colors & decor although I think the space could benefit from an adult sized chair or two. Seems like I'm always sitting on the floor. Then again isn't that the nature of a playroom?

Basement Rejects

Well to wrap up basement week around here, I thought I would share with you 2 design elements who's lives were cut tragically short. You all remember me swooning over the beautiful oyster shells I was using on a project. Well here is what I was working on:

My little slice of iridescent heaven. Until it came time to hang it. This beauty weighed a few 100 pearlescent pounds (ok perhaps not that much, but that puppy bent the mounting bracket). Defeated, I pealed the shells from the mirror & toyed with the idea of finding a sturdier replacement. But the fear of having something so heavy hanging over delicate, little heads made me decide to scrap this project. Design wise, it would have looked marvelous in the space, but it wasn't the prudent choice (anyone else thinking Dana Carvey? Wouldn't be prudent.). As of now, I'm mulling over a few other uses for the shells....they are too stunning not to use.

On to reject #2. Remember this swatch I had planned to use for couch pillows? It was described as a blue, cream & brown striped fabric. Well upon arrival I discovered a gigantic, rust-colored stripe running through the fabric! Didn't see that coming.

The unsightly stripe is wide & repeats twice in the fabric. A work around required too much effort at the time as all the sewing was done late at night while the little ones slept & Hubby was on a business trip. As a result, this guy received the boot and is now at home in the remnant pile. Luckily, I over bought on the other fabrics & could make up for this shortcoming. I still can't believe the company didn't bother to note that the fabric also contained the color rust and not just a smudge of it, 2 gigantic sections.

So there you have it, full access to the basement decorating dilemmas and drama. If you have any ideas for ways to use the oyster shells (I've got over 150 of them) I would love to hear. And has anyone else ever received fabric that didn't match the sample? Were you able to use it or was it banished to your fabric stash?

Basement Reveal

The basement "face-lift" as I like to call it, is complete. The layout, wall treatments, carpet, & built-ins were all here when we moved into the house. Rather than start anew, we decided to rework this 1990's basement and give it a masculine, aquatic feel (read more about the room inspiration here). I am delighted with the way the room came together. I would say it is a fresh, bright, playful spin on traditional decor.

The Playroom

When choosing wall decor, I racked my brain to come up with items that were not only esthetically pleasing, but also reflective of our family. I created a silhouette canvas of each kiddie, while the large chalkboard on the opposite wall features a whale, our elementary school's mascot. Above the love seat hangs a tortoise shell to remind us of the countless turtles we observe during our summers at the lake. And flanking the shell are plates I decoupaged in a fun number print to represent Peanut's love of all things numerical.

Despite my hesitation, the decision to add floor to ceiling drapes reigns supreme. We were completely amazed by how much larger (both in height and length) they made the basement feel. The drapes also unified the mismatch basement windows. And since we would like to have the option of using the basement as space for both kiddie and adult festivities, the full length drapes add a level of sophistication to the room.

Game Room

Hubby wanted this space to be all & only about the games (read: no frill or fuss). The built-ins function great as a buffet for parties and neatly house my crafting & sewing supplies. The only real decorative elements in the room are the two wall hangings I created to help bring some color and personalization to the room. Since I adorn every other room of the house with my design whims & wishes, it is easy to look the other way when it comes to this room and Hubby's design request or lack-there-of. Plus he is a saint to share his "man cave" with the kiddies.

So there you have it folks, our newly redecorated basement. I would be remiss if I did not send a whole hearted "Thank You" to YiaYia who helped me sew the drapes and pillow covers. So very blessed to have such a loving Mom. Now we can check basement off the list;  just in time for Birthday Party season.

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

So the basement "face lift" is nearly complete (click here to see reveal). In fact, the room is being christened this morning as we host a playdate for some of Peanut's school buddies.

But there is a very special section that will be off limits to these young lads…Belle's club. Seeing as how most of the basement is "man space", we felt it important to designate a special area just for the princess of the family. And here it is in all its pinkalicious glory.

The Girls' Club, as she named it, started off as a cedar closet under the basement stairs.

Belle & I set to work painting the bland space from ceiling to floor the perfect shade of bubblegum pink. To achieve this, I simply mixed and matched paints I had on hand until we found the shade of pink that was princess, tutus & cotton candy all rolled up in one.

I held to my DIY resolution and with some ingenuity, the whole project turned out to be free…just repurposed what was already laying around the house (plus the borrowed quart of magenta paint--thanks YiaYia and Bopi).

After the "room" dried, I banished Belle upstairs as I prettied up the place. Mainly this is a safe space to keep American Girl dolls and all their tiny and tempting accessories. So I treated it as a walk-in dollhouse, designating a dining, kitchen, and dressing area.

The club also features its own gallery wall.

Our family portrait Belle drew after Bear was born. I love how she drew the baby laying down:)

Along with a repurposed lampshade chandy and area rug.

Belle's reaction was worth every hour I spent crammed in the tiny closet.  Love you baby!
